About Us
We're on the frontlines of Alabama's rural communities working directly with local residents to develop place-based solutions to communities' most pressing challenges.
Our Projects
Mask-Making & COVID- Response
Our organizers have established a vast statewide network of volunteers providing handmade cloth masks and other material support to communities in need across three states. Our network consists of hundreds of sewists and a sophisticated distribution model to efficiently make and distribute handmade masks to healthcare facilities, meatpacking plants, and other populations especially vulnerable to the spread of COVID-19. In many cases, our volunteers have been the only source of masks and PPE, having supplied entire hospitals and workplaces in multiple areas.
Election Protection
Hometown Organizing Project is a founding partner of the Alabama Election Protection Network, a collaborative of nonpartisan grassroots organizations who are dedicated to upholding the core values of democracy. AEPN provides Alabamians with comprehensive information and assistance at all stages of voting, from registration to absentee and early voting, to casting a vote at the polls, to overcoming obstacles to their participation.
Rural Disaster Recovery Network
In March 2019, an EF-4 tornado touched down in Beauregard, AL (Lee County) killing 23 people in the rural unincorporated community. Our organizers were among the first on the ground assisting with cleanup and recovery, working hand-in-hand with those directly impacted by the storm. To better respond to this and future disasters, the Rural Disaster Recovery Network was formed to connect skilled volunteers and resources to meet on-the-ground needs and engage community leaders to mitigate the impact of future climate disasters.
